Where Fun Boils Over

Surrounded by the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, Door County is a natural peninsula and is often referred to as The Cape Cod of the Midwest. In the middle of this beautiful, natural retreat is our little village, Fish Creek. This is the place where it all comes together: the shoreline, the bluffs overlooking the deep waters of Lake Michigan, offshore islands in view, and perhaps the most complete public park for year round activities in Wisconsin: Peninsula State Park.

Outdoor and nature enthusiasts never run out of options at Peninsula State Park. Nearly seven miles of Lake Michigan's Green Bay shoreline wrap around a landscape of northern hardwood forests, meadows and wetlands – and awe-inspiring dolomite cliffs ascend over 150 feet. Miles of bicycling and hiking trails, boat launches and rentals, sport fishing, swimming, and golf are just the beginning! Eagle Tower, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and American Folklore Theater are also located in the park, and nature programs are offered by the White Cedar Nature Center.

Fish Creek is always ripe for fall and winter activities. A fall stroll through the park under the canopy of the changing leaves may be in order. Take a trolley tour, pick some apples in an orchard, select a perfect pumpkin for your doorstep, take in a concert, unwind in front of an inn fireplace or get pampered at a spa. During winter, Peninsula State Park is open for camping, cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hiking, and ice-fishing.

You can't visit Door County without going to a fish boil; this outdoor cooking ritual has been a local tradition for more than a century. Enjoy one of the area's many popular fish boils, where whitefish steaks and small potatoes are carefully cooked in a stainless-steel kettle or cauldron over a wood fire. Kerosene is then poured onto the fire, causing flames to shoot high in the air and the water to boil over. When the cooking's done, you can head to your table with your just-cooked meal.
